Supporting College Athletics: How Alumni Can Make a Lasting Impact

As a lifelong supporter of Rutgers Athletics, I’ve seen firsthand the incredible role that sports play in shaping young athletes and building school pride. College athletics go beyond just wins and losses—they create lifelong memories, teach valuable life lessons, and instill discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.

For alumni, supporting college athletics isn’t just about watching games or wearing school colors. It’s about giving back to the programs that shaped us, ensuring that future student-athletes have the resources, opportunities, and facilities they need to succeed. Whether through financial contributions, mentorship, or simply showing up and cheering in the stands, alumni have the power to make a lasting impact on their school’s athletic programs.

Why College Athletics Matter

College sports are more than just entertainment. They are a vital part of the college experience, fostering school spirit, creating a sense of community, and providing student-athletes with life-changing opportunities.

For many student-athletes, sports provide a path to higher education—scholarships open doors that might otherwise be closed. Beyond that, the discipline, leadership, and teamwork learned on the field translate into successful careers in business, finance, medicine, and countless other industries.

But running a successful athletic program takes resources. From scholarships and travel expenses to training facilities and coaching staff, it all requires funding. This is where alumni support becomes crucial.

Ways Alumni Can Make an Impact

1. Financial Contributions: More Than Just Donations

One of the most direct ways to support college athletics is through financial contributions. Many people assume that only major donors who give millions make an impact, but that’s not the case. Every contribution—big or small—helps fund scholarships, facility upgrades, and essential athletic programs.

Some ways to give include:

  • Annual Giving Programs – Many schools have specific funds dedicated to athletics, where alumni can contribute annually.
  • Endowed Scholarships – These ensure that financial aid is available for student-athletes for years to come.
  • Facility Contributions – Donations help fund state-of-the-art training centers, locker rooms, and stadium upgrades.

At Rutgers, I’ve been fortunate enough to contribute to projects that enhance the student-athlete experience, including naming a classroom in the Rodkin Academic Success Center in honor of my father, Christopher Barbrack. These types of contributions leave a lasting legacy and directly impact student-athletes’ academic and athletic journeys.

2. Attending Games and Events: Show Up and Support

Financial contributions are important, but just as valuable is showing up and supporting the teams in person. A packed stadium not only boosts morale but also helps attract recruits, creates revenue, and strengthens the program.

If you’re an alum, make it a point to:

  • Attend games, whether at home or on the road.
  • Support fundraising events like golf outings or dinners.
  • Participate in alumni gatherings centered around athletics.

Simply put, your presence matters. It shows student-athletes that alumni care and that they are playing for something bigger than just their team.

3. Mentoring and Career Development for Athletes

Many student-athletes won’t go on to play professionally, which means their careers will be built in the business world, tech industry, finance, or countless other fields. As alumni, we have the opportunity to mentor, guide, and help them transition from sports to the workforce.

Ways to support include:

  • Offering internships at your company.
  • Speaking at career panels hosted by the athletic department.
  • One-on-one mentorship, providing advice on life after sports.

I’ve seen firsthand how impactful this can be. Student-athletes are disciplined, hardworking, and great under pressure—traits that make them excellent hires in any industry. By supporting them off the field, alumni can help ensure their long-term success.

4. Building a Stronger Alumni Network

One of the best things about being a sports fan is the built-in sense of community. Alumni from all over the country (and world) are united by their love for their school’s teams. That connection should extend beyond game days.

Schools with strong alumni networks create opportunities for fundraising, career placement, and mentorship. As an alumnus, you can:

  • Organize watch parties and alumni gatherings.
  • Stay connected through alumni associations and LinkedIn groups.
  • Encourage fellow alumni to get involved and give back.

A strong network means more support for student-athletes, better career connections, and a richer, more engaged alumni base.

Leaving a Legacy Through College Athletics

Giving back isn’t just about making a financial donation or attending a game—it’s about leaving a legacy. The programs we support today shape the student-athletes of tomorrow. Whether through scholarships, mentorship, or simply showing up and cheering, alumni have the power to strengthen their alma mater’s athletic programs for generations to come.

For me, Rutgers Athletics has been a lifelong passion. The lessons I learned as a student, the friendships I built, and the pride I feel when I see Rutgers teams compete make it easy to want to give back. It’s not about recognition—it’s about paying it forward and ensuring future student-athletes have the same, if not better, opportunities.

If you’re an alum, I encourage you to find your way to get involved. Whether it’s writing a check, mentoring a student-athlete, or just showing up on game day, your support makes a difference.

Because at the end of the day, college athletics isn’t just about sports—it’s about building a community, creating opportunities, and making a lasting impact.
